What is Durbar Square in Kathmandu?
Durbar Square is a generic name for the plazas that can be found in front of royal palaces in Nepal and the most famous of these is in the capital city, Kathmandu. In the square you will find the Hanuman Dhoka Palace which was home to Nepalese kings until the end of the 19th century. You can also visit two museums in the square which should provide a good understanding of Nepalese history and culture. While you are in the area you should also pay a visit to some other local attractions such as the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Lumbini, the sacred Hindu Pashupatinath Temple and the Sagarmatha National Park which is home to Mount Everest.
